The novel Dirt Music is being made into a movie and now they have the proper cast; Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell. Our friends over at cinematical.com tell us more:
The first casting change came when Nicole Kidman left the film and was replaced by Rachel Weisz. Then, Heath Ledger dropped out of the project to focus on his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight. It would seem that everything is now back on track for the film, since Variety has reported that Colin Farrell has taken over from Ledger to co-star with Weisz in the Outback drama.
Here is some info on the book: Dirt Music is an Australian love story about people stifled by grief and regret, about breaking with the past and the lure of music, the discover that there is no silence in nature. The definition of dirt music is any music you can play without electricity.
I’m surprised that this film has had so many stars drop out. I can understand Ledger leaving for the Dark Knight but I’m perplexed by Kidman. I read a few reviews of this book online and the story also holds quite a bit of humor, I would think that a film about music and letting go of the past with wit and love would be a draw for most actors.
But this isn’t going to be a flashy film so I can understand people leaving for greener pastures. Weisz I think chose this role in thought of her growing career as a more serious film actress. Farrell I’m sure just wanted the work.
Will this be a good movie? I don’t know, but a love story with the back drop of Australia doesn’t sound too bad to me, especially if the music isn’t the only thing that gets dirty.
