Bay to direct 2012: the War of the Souls

As much as I tend to dislike the differences between a book and a movie based on a book, I still love the idea of literature being made into feature films. I am often driven by story in a movie, so it is encouraging to see a story be the starting point of a movie. But then it rarely works out good.

Yahoo News says:

Director Michael Bay and the writers of his upcoming film “Transformers” are reuniting to bring sci-fi author’s Whitley Strieber forthcoming novel “2012: The War for Souls” to the big screen.

Talks are in the preliminary stages, but it is known that Bay intends to direct, while Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman will produce for Warner Bros. via their Kurtzman/Orci banner

Strieber’s story centers on an academic researcher who discovers that multiple versions of Earth co-exist in different dimensions, but all are threatened by an apocalypse to occur in 2012 prophesied by the ancient Mayans. By opening a portal into a parallel universe, he makes contact with his double to stop the prophecy from being fulfilled. The book is due in the fall by St. Martin imprint Tor.

Now save your Bay-Hating routine. If you don’t like Michael Bay, we get it.

This however sounds like a good movie. Even better when it was called The One and starred Jet Li. Ok, so it isn’t exactly the same. I am mentally aroused by the idea of a cross dimensional thing as that theme comes up a lot in my own science fiction works. I always like seeing different takes on stories that deal with cross dimensional travel and meeting “yourself” from there.

It is also interesting to see that this book is not even out yet, and they are adapting it to a movie. Obviously someone has read it and thinks its a good story.

Do you think the book will drive the movie, or the movie will drive the book? Sounds like an interesting way to sell books, but I would sooner see a movie based on a book that has already proven itself popular.

At least this way I wont read it ahead of time and ruin the movie for me!
