With the exception of Daniel Craig, I always thought Peirce Brosnan was the best Bond. Of course nearly every quality that makes him a great James Bond are the exact qualities that make me surprised to hear this news. Brosnan is joining Meryl Streep in an adaption to film of the stage musical Momma Mia
Brosnan will play Sam, one of three men summoned to a Greek isle by a young woman who believes one of them is her father.
For Brosnan, the opportunity to belt out such ABBA standards as “S.O.S.,” which will be a duet with Streep, was irresistible.
“I said yes right away because it meant working with Meryl Streep,” Brosnan told Daily Variety. “Secondly, I saw the show with my family in London, and found it just so wonderfully happy and joyful, and so pitched in time forever in the 1970s. What a kick in the pants, to be able to go off and spend time with Meryl on some Greek island, singing ABBA songs.”
Now it appears that the suave smooth presence Brosnan brings to the table was part of the appeal.
I love the idea of taking musicals to film. If they are done right, they can be a lot of fun. I attended the stage production of Phantom of the Opera 3 times in Toronto, and I just love the movie. Sure, the movie still had some problems, and its not as good as the stage show, but its great that I can relive my experience of the stage show any time I want by popping in the movie. Next musical to translate to film that I would love to see: Avenue Q.
I am cool with stage musicals becoming movies. However, taking a movie and making a musical out of it just leaves me with a bad taste. Evil Dead the Musical?
