G.I. Joe Movie

JoevideoboxWe all knew it would only be a matter of time. Especially with the Transformers coming up. It seems that a G.I. Joe movie is in development, and that it may have just snagged it’s first star. Oscar Nominee Mark Wahlberg. The good folks over at Moviehole gives this:

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer of Wahlberg’s latest movie “Shooter”, told IESB that he’s keen for Wahlberg to wear the camouflaged panties on that one – playing Duke, one of the heavies in the “Joe” team. And Wahlberg – who you’d think might be chasing more “Departed” like roles after his recent nod – has agreed to do it.

The movie is said to be set before the rise of the COBRA organization, the film will show how the man the world will one day call Cobra Commander created his terrorist organization and honed it into a worldwide threat. Other COBRA characters, such as Destro and Stormshadow, are being planned to be included in the film. As for who is on the JOE team, look for appearances by the team’s main players, such as Duke, Hawk and Snake Eyes.

This movie could be a MASSIVE tentpole blockbuster. However… the one aspect of this idea that has always bothered me… and I still don’t know how on earth they can get around it… is how do you do a kid friendly movie (and make no mistake about it folks… the toy company will only allow this movie to be made if it can sell their toys… and to do that kids need to be there in the theaters) in today’s world with terrorists and guns… without totally stipping it down and making it a PG movie?

There are a lot of us who would love to see a badass G.I. Joe movie… but make no mistake… that’s NOT what this movie is going to be. And I just don’t know if I can get excited about it like that. Your thoughts?
