Shrek and Dreamworks Going All 3-D

Shrek-3DI really don’t know what I think about this. 3-D is cool and all… but let’s be real here. 3-D is a gimmick. It’s a novelty. It’s cool to see something in the format… but after you’ve seen it… well… it’s done. For any real material purposes, 3-D doesn’t add anything to a movie or it’s story. It’s just a cool little thing to see… once in a while.

So now along comes Dreamworks animation and apparently they’ve announced that starting in 2009, all their films will be 3-D… including Shrek 4. The good folks over at Cinematical give us this:

The first movie DreamWorks Animation will release in 3-D is Monsters Vs. Aliens, which looks like it will be an homage to Asian monster movies. The movie will open exclusively in 3-D in the summer of 2009, when 3-D projection equipment is expected to be set up on a few thousand screens in the U.S (especially now that Dolby has made the transition cheaper for cinemas). DreamWorks apparently doesn’t think 3-D-enabled home entertainment systems will be so popular yet, because the movie is also being produced in 2-D for its DVD and television release.

Personally, I think Dreamworks should be focusing more of their money and energy on producing better movies to start with. The key s to getting more people to your films isn’t the newest gimmick… it’s making better stories and movies. But maybe I’m in the minority here. Maybe I’ve missed something and you guys think 3-D adds a lot more to a movie than I’m giving it credit for. What do you think?
