Spiderman Takes Tokyo

Spiderman is going to kick off its third installment in style. Big event, huge names, all the glitz and glamour you would expect from a Hollywood Blockbuster. But its not in Hollywood.

Yahoo News reports

A star-studded premiere will be held April 16 at a Tokyo cinema. Those expected to attend include director Sam Raimi, series creator Stan Lee, and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.

The film will be released in various parts of Africa, Europe and Asia before being shown in the United States on May 4, according to Sony’s Web site.

So everyone on the planet will get to see this movie before the North American audience does.

I honestly don’t know just how often this happens. Being from the side of the planet that faces the sun I just assumed we would get everything first. I understand why they are doing it, and its not really a shocker that another region is getting it first. Just that my Hollywood conditioned brain automatically reacted that this was unconventional. Then instantly I am thinking its just wrong to think that.

It is interesting however that Snyder at 20th Century Fox thought delaying the Canadian release of movies would curb piracy. I would be curious to see how this small window affects the demand of crappy screener copies 2 days before we get the big release here.
