Superman Sequel News

Now a lot of people didnt like Superman Returns because it lacked action, or had too much focus on the romance. I wont even get into Lois’ son thing. But right from the mouth of the man of steel himself, we get some hope for the sequel.

Fimwad says:

from the sound of the film’s Super star Brandon Routh, the sequel will be packed with loads more action and heroic daring-do. Routh recently spoke with EmpireOnline and dropped a few hints about the plot of Singer’s next superhero flick.

“In the first one, the obstacle was Superman’s love for Lois and his son, and Luthor using that against him. I just know that in the next film there will be a lot of action and I’m gonna get to fight something, or someone. An enemy with real physical power might be worked in there, definitely.”

No word yet on who that super-powered enemy might be, but despite his cult appeal, it looks like it won’t be General Zod. Zod, as you know, appeared in Superman II alongside two fellow Krypton baddies. Says Routh, “I don’t know how much we want to reprise characters that have appeared in the series before, since we’ve reset and used the first film to pay homage to all that’s come before. Now I think Bryan (Singer) might want to go somewhere new with it, which I think will be exciting.”

I didn’t mind the lack of action in Superman Returns, and I like that they delved into the story. You needed to rely on story in a movie where Superman was up against a mere mortal like Luthor. Otherwise, it would have been easy for Supes to just fly in, slap Luthor into a coma and roll credits.

That being said, Routh hints at a big slugger brawl for the sequel. Does this mean Darkseid? Doomsday is already slated for the animated feature, so it is unlikely they will reuse him for a movie. And despite people itching for the Return of Zod, we already have word that it wont be.

I think Zod’s return would make for a GREAT movie, but it doesn’t look like it is going to happen. The problem is that you need a recognizable enemy to market this movie to the non comic reading fans. I honestly cannot think of any opponents in the comics that the regular guy on the street would recognize.

However, I woudlnt suggest they make a NEW enemy either. We saw how well that went with Superman 4.
