DVD variants are getting out of control. You now will have to wait 5 years after a dvd is released if you want the ultimite special edition, directors cut, extra footage extravaganza that was not seen in theatres. Our friends at joblo have a funny story today about a new marketing angle that is getting out of control – dumb tag on names for the dvd editions. Here is a humorous list they have assembled:
PORKY’S (the ONE SIZE FITS ALL edition)
COMING TO AMERICA (the SOUL GLOW edition)
DREAMGIRLS (the SHOWSTOPPER edition)
FLETCH (the JANE DOE edition)
MRS. DOUBTFIRE (the BEHIND THE SEAMS edition)
40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN (the DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE edition)
TRADING PLACES (the LOOKING GOOD, FEELING GOOD edition)
Often extra footage will make a movie worse, Kingpin in particular is a movie I bought and wished they had kept the extra scenes out of it. The only positive thing I see from multiple releases of the same movie is that you can usually find the earlier versions in bargain bins, and those are the ones I purchase.
