One of the problems with Pirates of the Caribbean 2 (and there were a few of them) was it was just too damn long, and it felt like it. Much of the film just felt dragged out and unnecessary. It came in at about two and a half hours in length.
Now look, I’m all for films being long if the story really requires it to be and it can keep the audience engaged the whole way through (the Lord of the Rings films for example). But a lot of films just don’t require that kind of length and they often suffer from excess on he screen. It’s amazing how much better a movie can feel when like 10 minutes are edited out and it becomes just a tighter film.
But news has come out that Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is going to come in at just 10 minutes shy of 3 full hours. The good folks over at chud give us the following:
Pirates 2 was a good enough movie, but damn it was long. It felt long. It just kept on going way past the point where most people in the audience were satiated – it was like Gore Verbinski was acting out the Gluttony kill from Seven cinematically. The movie would have been so much better with 15 to 20 minutes cut out, and it’s not hard to imagine that At World’s End will be just as bloated.
I completely agree. If anything Pirates 3 probably should have been tightened up. But at the same time… who knows right? Maybe the film really does require and need almost 3 hours to really properly be told. All I’m saying is that I doubt it… but it is possible. But come on… how many bloody times do we have to hear “This is the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow”??? We’ll know soon enough. I’m still looking forward to seeing this quite a bit… but I’ve got a feeling this isn’t a movie that needs 3 hours.
