Christina Ricci is joining “Matrix” creators Larry and Andy Wachowski’s live-action adaptation of the 1960s cartoon “Speed Racer.” Emile Hirsch,Susan Sarandon and John Goodman already have boarded the high-octane Warner Bros. project, which is based on the anime series created by Tatsuo Yoshida for Japanese audiences and later imported to the U.S.
“Speed” centers on a young race car driver, Speed (Hirsch), and his quest for glory in his thundering, gadget-laden vehicle Mach 5. Ricci will star as Speed’s girlfriend Trixie, his formidable ally on and off the track.
I have not had a chance to see many of the speed racer cartoons. I know the slogan “Speed Racer GO!” And it is a great slogan indeed. I will say that the cast looks fucking awesome. John Goodman is a guy that is extremely talented and since his work in Lebowski – will always have my allegiance.
Movies about race car drivers keep my interest for reasons unknown to me. I am not a fan of auto racing, and yet when a film is done about auto racing professionals I am always excited. Street racing …meh, but movies about race car drivers on any sort of track and I am loving it. i cannot say that I am excited about this project at this point in the game, but auto racing + kick-ass cast means I will see it.
