I am going to get out my salad bar sneeze guard plexiglass shield before I post about this bit of news. The rabid BayHaters are going to be frothing and spitting their insults over this one.
Last we heard, a remake of The Birds was in “active development” over at Michael Bay’s production company. Well today we have a slight update we discovered in the cliff-notes of a Variety article. Universal is aiming to begin shooting the remake by the end of the year.
I wonder if the new version will be a remade of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic or a total restart based on the Daphne Du Maurier short story which inspired the film. Hitchcock’s film is definitely due for an update, especially considering the advances in special effects (CG..etc). It’s probably a bad sign that Boogeyman scribes Juliet Snowden and Stiles White were attached to the screenplay adaptation.
Now before you all get your superman underoos in a bind, keep in mind that this is not BAY directing this movie. It is his production company. He is supplying the tools. However, considering the raving success that Boogeyman script got those guys, you may prefer Bay to be directing. I dont know which is better news. Bay may still direct, so far he is just producing.
As the article points out, if there was a classic due for a remake, Hitchcock’s Birds is one of them. Recently we have movies less than 20 years old slated for remakes, and we are already tired of remaking TV Shows, so why not?
Rumour has it that the birds will go crazy after a meteor crashes into the earth at a 30 degree angle while an American flag waves in the morning sun.
