Blockbuster Theaters

bbuster.jpgBlockbuster is going into the theater business! To launch their new project, they are opening the flagship theater in Mexico. We get the news from cinematical:

The movie rental chain Blockbuster is expanding its horizons into theatrical exhibition, of all places. The corporation has announced that next month it will open its first movie theater, a multiplex, in Cholula, Mexico. The multiplex will be called Blockbuster Cinema, but Blockbuster isn’t simply licensing its brand name — the company will operate the theater under a 10-year agreement. The new 11-screen theater will be located in a shopping center that will also include a Blockbuster rental store.

Like Hernando Cortez Blockbuster has invaded Mexico and will plunder villages for their treasures. Mexico may be a good place to start their chain. i have no idea who owns theaters in Mexico, but if Blockbuster can start rolling out multiplexes with little competition it makes sense.

Having a rental store built into the theater is a great idea. In the future if they start to release DVD’s in conjunction with the theater release – having a store to sell them would be ideal. Timmy loves the movie and sees it for sale outside of the theater. Timmy yells at mommy to buy the DVD. Mommy regrets having children and buys Timmy the DVD to shut him up. Timmy is happy and Blockbuster just double dipped your mom’s ass. If Mexico is successful it will be interesting to see what countries Blockbuster starts to grow their theater chain next.
