Rumor flying around was that Sasha Baron Cohen was cast to play Freddy Mercury in an upcoming biopic. Word on the street today is that the news was false. We get the update from MTV:
Reports that “Borat” star Sacha Baron Cohen will play legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in a musical biopic are “absolutely untrue,” the actor’s publicist told MTV News.
An unidentified source told Britain’s Daily Mirror that “filmmakers are working flat out to get the best possible script. Sacha loves the idea he can get away with playing Freddie after modeling Borat’s look on him.”
I thought this may of been a joke. Cohen came to the stage as Borat dressed as Freddy during the MTV awards a few years back. It was fall over funny, but not a realistic depiction. I am excited to see a film about Freddy and hope it comes to fruition. He could be the greatest rock and roll front man of all time and his story needs to be told.
Johnny Depp is rumored to be interested in the role, and to be honest I think he would do a great job. I am trying to think of other guys that could play Freddy… Cohen may actually be the second best pick, or the lead singer from Electric Six.
Freddy Mercury was a glorious man, his tribute concert is a much watch and hopefully the film (whenever it comes out) will do justice to this legendary performer.
