Mark Cuban And Todd Wagner’s production company 2929 is getting into the theatre business. The theatres will be high end, comfortable, and ticket costs will include snacks. We get the news from cinematical:
Cuban and Wager are now working on making going to the movies the kind of experience that will get butts off of couches nationwide. They plan to put millions of dollars into a theatre model that will look more like your living room, complete with VIP chairs, sofas, and beanbags (could be cool). They want to have independent, foreign, and blockbuster films all at the same multiplex, like the Arclight in LA (cheers to that). They want to bring in higher-end food and drink, and are introducing a higher-priced ticket (is that possible?) which will include concessions and let the audiences serve themselves with something called the “Wall of Popcorn.” Cuban and Wagner are unveiling their new concepts at three theatres in their Landmark chain — locations in Baltimore, Denver, and at the Westside Pavilion in Los Angeles.
I am all for this idea, those that want to pay extra and ensure that the theatre experience is going to rule will be able to do so. It will be interesting to see how much tickets will be; and if people feel like paying more for a cushy film experience. I am not crazy about the idea of including concessions into the ticket price, but for those that gorge, all you can eat concessions may be appealing
I wonder if modelling a theatre after a great living room will be a good or bad idea. Will it cause more people to leave the house or just renovate their own living rooms? One thing is certain; Nothing Ventured, nothing gained. I think going for the more intimate setting themed for the serious theatre patron was the right direction to move and I will be on the lookout for further news about these theatres. International friends what do you guys think about this idea?
