Rumors about Machete being made into a full length feature appear to be a reality. We get confirmation from the moviehole:
Danny Trejo, who played the character of ‘Machete’ in the faux trailer that was wedged between the two “Grindhouse” movies “Planet Terror” and “Death Proof”, tells IESB that a feature-length film, featuring the character, has been greenlit. Trejo says low box-office returns aside, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino are geniuses and they’re still pushing forward with a “Machete” movie.
“That’s the big one”, says Trejo, who’s appeared in near every one of Rodriguez’s movies. “We’re going to do Machete next, and Bob and Harvey Weinstein have already said, ‘Yeah, we’re gotta do it’.”
I was so excited when I heard the rumors that Machete may be made into a full length feature. I am so pumped about this film, and am tickled to my bones that it is being made. With news that Don’t and Thanksgiving could be made into a double feature it looks like most of the Grindhouse trailers will spin into films. Grindhouse is shaping up to be the world’s most expensive commercial.
It will be interesting to see how well Machete does at the box office. If it cleans the clock of Grindhouse at the box office, it will not surprise me, but it will seem strange. The movie that had so much hype behind it fell flat, had some trailers, and the trailers are what end up making money.
Regardless of where you stand on the Grindhouse films – everyone loved the trailers. In the theatre where I saw Grindhouse people went nuts over the machete trailer (Insano, nutso, crazy, nuts). I imagine reactions were similar at almost all theaters and it makes sense that the film would ride the buzz.
