Peter Weir (Master and Commander) Up For Directing The Hobbit

Peter-WeirEver since the split between Peter Jackson and New Line occurred, everyone has been speculating about who will take up the reigns for the film adaptation of “The Hobbit“. In recent weeks its become apparent that Sam Raimi is the front runner for the job… but now it’s being said that New Line is courting another director in case Raimi doesn’t work out.

Peter Weir, the man who helmed movies like Dead Poets Society, Witness and Master and Commander is being approached to consider The Hobbit as well. The folks at AICN aren’t saying that Raimi is out… just that they’re also courting Weir.

I’m all for Raimi doing The Hobbit… I’ll even forgive the crap fest called Spider-Man 3 (everyone has a bad one once in a while). But Weir is a VERY interesting proposition. He is a very different director than Raimi, but at the same time is an incredible story teller. As a life long fan of The Hobbit, I would be perfectly contented to find out that either one of these guys is going to direct it. We’ll see how this unfolds.
