In my youth when I enjoyed a film I watched it repeatedly. We did not own a VCR but would often rent one for a few weeks at a time. Because of this, during the summer when we had a VCR on rental we would watch a film over and over all day long and burn it into our memories. Star Wars, Pee Wees Big Adventure and Strange Brew were all movies that received this treatment. My mother got so sick of us watching Strange Brew one day that she actually left the house while we were hard at work committing it to memory.
For those of you that have not seen this film, Strange Brew is a movie that follows SCTV characters Bob and Doug McKenzie as they try to solve a murder caper at the local Elsinore brewery.
Bob and Doug are hilarious stereotypical Canadian boys that only really seem to care about getting drunk as much as humanly possible. They wear toques, heavy winter coats, and boots as if to be prepared for a blizzard all year round. The slogans of EH, Take Off, and Hoser are used liberally and constantly and usually in some sort of combination.
So much about the movie is hilarious. Drunk Lion, Rat in a bottle, Locked in the Looney Bin, Steamroller, Hypnotized Hockey Crazies, Max Von Sydow as the brew-master, Hose-head the dog, Jelly Donut Bribery and the list goes on.
For those of you that have not yet seen this movie please treat yourself. This film is a comedy classic in my books and it is my pleasure to recommend it.
