One of the quintessential films of the 1980’s was the movie Wall Street. The rather basic plot of the movie was really just a container for reflection and commentary of the mindset and philosophies that engulfed the era of Reganomics and a society that was in an unprecedented boom to which at the time there seemed to be no end. I’ve never seen a film that really captured the opulence and twisted sense of immortality that the 80’s gave that vein of North American existence. And oh yeah… the film gave Michael Douglas his Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko, who uttered the films immortal words: “Greed is good. Greed works”. Yup, that pretty much sums up the 80’s mentality.
The film was wonderful. But a sequel? Looks like Michael Douglas does indeed want to follow in the footsteps of Sly Stallone and Bruce Willis and go back to the well that gave him success before. The good folks over at JoBlo give us this:
The NY Times is reporting that a sequel to Oliver Stone’s WALL STREET is indeed in the works, and that the character who brought Douglas a Best Actor Oscar will be the focus of the new film, with Charlie Sheen’s protegé character Bud Cox absent from the new script. The movie, already called MONEY NEVER SLEEPS (after one of Gekko’s many mottos) will focus on Gekko’s shady wheelings and dealings in the modern hedge fund era. At the end of WALL STREET, Gekko appeared to be on his way to jail, though it was never confirmed. It turns out that he did spend a significant time in the slammer, and has had time to reflect on what he’s done, and of course figure how not to get caught next time.
I like the title “Money Never Sleeps” and Michael Douglas, despite his lack of big box office success, is one hell of an actor. Gordon Gekko is that role that just seemed to suit him better than any other in his career, so I can sort of understand the appeal for him to go back to it once again. Gekko is a great character so this could work.
