The Korean horror film A Tale Of Two Sisters is going to get repackaged in Hollywood, we get the scoop from movieweb
Kim Jee-Woon’s 2003 Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters is getting a Hollywood remake. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elizabeth Banks will be starring in the adaptation.
The story follows two sisters as they return home to their father after spending some time in a mental institution. An evil ghost thwarts their recovery. Brothers Thomas and Charles Guard are directing the mayhem.
Asian horror remakes are now a genre. There have been alot of them and I do not think the trend will cool down anytime soon. I am not a huge fan of English remakes, if possible I prefer to search out the original film and watch it with subtitles. I know there is a great number of people that hate subtitles and for them I think the remakes are a way for people to enjoy the stories retold in their native tongue.
One of the positive things that the glut of Asian remakes has brought us is an interest in the source material. People who like a remake will sometimes hunt out the original and at times prefer it. This causes awareness of foreign cinema and gives filmmakers outside of Hollywood an international audience. I remember the first time I was introduced to Hong Kong cop films by my friend Wintle, some guy named John Woo and Chow Yun Fat did this film Hard Boiled, and it fucking blew me away.
I hate remakes as much, if not more than most but one of the benefits of a remake is that it will often reintroduce people to the original and to me, this is a strong positive in their favor.
With regards to this project, “A Tale Of Two Sisters” is a film I have not yet had the pleasure of seeing. International friends those of you that have seen this – what are your thoughts on the film itself and the news of this remake? I will say that anything that stars Elizabeth Banks always starts with high hopes. She has a smile that demands attention, and has great ability as an actress.
