Did Sean Connery Turn Down Indiana Jones 4 Because The Script Sucked?

By now, everyone knows that Sean Connery has declined an offer to reprise his role in the upcoming Indiana Jones 4 movie (as you’ll recall, Connery played Indiana’s father, Dr. Jones Sr., in the thrid installment of the film.

Up to this point, George Lucas has been insisting that he does indeed have Jones Sr. (Sean Connery) in the script. All we’ve been waiting for is the final word that Connery was either in or out. Well… the word came out the other day that Connery was indeed out. Connery sites the reason for his declining the offer on the fact that he is just having too much fun being retired. That’s very nice of him to say… but I DON’T BELIEVE IT.

Let’s put this in perspective. If Sean Connery (who I LOVE as an actor) really did turn down the role in Indiana Jones 4 because he doesn’t want to come out of retirement… then why didn’t he just say so 6 months ago? Why not 4 months ago? Why wait till the last possible moment to announce he was turning the part down? I have a theory.

SEAN CONNERY TURNED DOWN INDIANA JONES 4 BECAUSE THE SCIPT SUCKED

Let’s not forget that Connery’s last film was The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, a film that got brutal reviews (for good reason) and he personally got a lot of the flack because in many ways the film was his baby). Sir Connery is NOT accustomed to that sort of thing (not that he’s never done a stincker before). There was no way he was going to come out of retirement for what he thought was a bad film.

Although this is pure speculation on my part, the timing of all this seems to suggest that Connery was INTERESTED in doing the film… but after reading the script, and probably going back and forth with George and Steven for a little bit… when it came down to zero hour he decided to not do it. To me, it all adds together.

Other people have emailed me and commented on the site speculating such things… and I happen to agree. The reason Sean Connery isn’t in Indiana Jones 4 is because the script is a bad one. So what do you think? Did Sean really just want to stay in retirement and there is nothing more than that…. or was there more to the story? Leave your thoughts below.
