No week would be complete without a news story about the remake of Fletch. It appears Joshua Jackson has now been tapped to play the lead role. We get the story from the moviehole:
Former “Dawson’s Creek” star Joshua Jackson will lose the Caesar hairdo to play investigative reporter Irwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher in Fletch Won”, says IESB.net.
The long-in-development film has also snagged the services of director Steve Pink (“Accepted”).
The long-gestating film has gone through more directors’ (Kevin Smith was originally on board) and actors’ (Everyone from Jason Lee to Brad Pitt, Ryan Reynolds and recently, Zach Braff) than Musso & Franks. In more recent times, “Scrubs” duo Bill Lawrence and Zach Braff were eyeing off the project. When Braff nixed the idea, Lawrence seemingly lost enthusiasm for the project.
Fletch news comes and goes but no progress ever seems to be made. I wonder if movie studios just created this news just to see how many times it would swirl around the internet. It seems like years have passed and Fletch has not come any closer to fruition.
I do remember X-Men rumors flying around for years before the movie was actually made. It was back and forth a lot of speculation that Glen Danzig would play Wolverine and then fury when Jackman got the role. Perhaps this is just the nature of the beast. Some films just come together quickly and others shamble together over time. As for the Fletch remake, I will believe it when I see it.
I was never a fan of Dawson’s Creek, but Jackson does seem to have a smarmy-ness about him that could lend well to a Fletch character. Chevy Chase is a tough act to follow, whoever lands the role will have a high standard to uphold.
