It looks like there is a Jonah Hex movie in development. Combining genres in a film can be pretty interesting to see (with the possible exception of Sci-Fi Romantic Comedies). For those of you who may not know much about Jonah Hex (heck, not a lot of people do, including myself), Jonah Hex is sort of a “Two Face” of the old west. He’s a western anti-hero archetype with half of his face horribly disfigured. No super-powers (as far as I know), but pretty much a bad ass.
Word is now out that Warner Bros. is developing a movie adaptation at the moment with Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine (the guys who did CRANK) working the script. When I had the 2 guys in studio for The Movie Blog: Uncut show a couple of months back, they mentioned they were working on a Western… but I didn’t know it was Jonah Hex.
However, with the super-hero craze going on and the subsequent success they’re having at the box office, it’s not surprising to hear they’re going to work in a “supernatural element” to the adaptation. Yahoo gives us this:
It will be developed by “Crank” filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who are not making a straight-ahead Western but plan to develop the character with some of the supernatural overtones in the hopes of creating a franchise.
So can a Western like this combined with super-hero-ish overtones work today? I’m not so sure. Although I will admit that one fo the few cool things about the Ghost Rider flick was the old west Sam Elliot Ghost Rider. I wonder if that had anything to do with the inspiration to bring Hex to the screen?
