Ok, let’s put aside how horrible of a movie “I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry” is (and trust me, it’s bad)… I really didn’t hear the kind of buzz around it that would make me think for a moment that it had a chance to knock Harry Potter out of top spot while still only on its second weekend. But it’s done just that.
Yahoo News has this:
Adam Sandler’s faux gay comedy “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” charmed $34.8 million from moviegoers its first weekend in theaters to nudge the latest “Harry Potter” film from the top of the box office, according to studio estimates on Sunday. “Chuck and Larry,” starring Sandler and Kevin James as heterosexual Brooklyn firefighters who pose as a gay couple to qualify for domestic-partner benefits, underscored Sandler’s continuing box office clout, though it fell short of several of his past No. 1 film openings.
I guess I’m not really all that surprised that Chuck and Larry took $37 million (when you really think about it… for summer of 2007 that’s not all that huge… and Sandler has had bigger openings that that. What surprises me is Potter dropped down to just $32 million. For most films, $32 million on your second weekend would be HUGE… but I guess I was thinking with the hype of the book this week, a lot more people would be rushing out to see the film. Guess not.
Or who knows… maybe all those Potter fans stayed home to read their newly released books instead of heading to the theater? It’s a theory.
