Danny Boyle Bashes Eli Roth

Director Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Sunshine) has come out swinging at Director Eli Roth (The Hostel movies). Why? Not sure. But through our friends over at Slashfilm, we get the trash talking quote from Boyle talking about Roth:

“His movies aren’t even particularly well done,” Boyle said. “They’re not even scary. They’re horrible, but that’s not scary. It’s not suspense. And if you watch my films in detail, there’s actually not a lot of violence in them. You get numb with violence very quickly.”

Ok, now here’s the thing. I just lost pretty much all respect for Danny Boyle. Not as a filmmaker… but as a person. The funny thing is that I think I pretty much agree with everything he said. So why do I think it was bush league for Boyle to say it? Because it’s not his place to say it.

Here’s the thing. I’m all for critiquing and giving negative commentary. HOWEVER… I don’t think it’s the place of any director to bash another director that way. Nor do I think any actor should publicly bash another actor. I find it really distasteful and pathetic when a person in a field, publicly bashes the work of another person in their field. That’s pussy. You don’t do that. Let other people do that.

That’s the main reason you will never see us here on The Movie Blog talk trash about another movie website (there was this one time me and CHUD got into it… but only after we prefaced it with saying CHUD is a great site with great people, and the thing I took issue with was something we’ve been guilty of ourselves too… so it was really about an issue, and not about them specifically). It’s not my place to bash other movie and media sites… that’s YOUR job as the reader to judge.

For a talented director like Boyle to lower himself like this is nothing but sad. I agree in most part with his comment… but it’s not his place to give that comment. As a director, he’s free to comment on Roth’s political beliefs if he wants… or his dietary habits…. but don’t publicly trash another directors WORK. It’s not your place. Just my two cents worth.
