I was reading a very well written interview today in The Times with Dennis Hopper. During the interview Hopper had some brief but hilarious commentary to make about his work in the Speed franchise. We get the following excerpt from The Times:
Hopper has appeared in more than 150 films, but today he doesn’t want to talk about any of them. Not his 1954 debut in Johnny Guitar, his turns with James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause or Giant, his hatred for Easy Rider co-star Peter Fonda, or the critical mauling for his direction of The Last Movie. He certainly isn’t in the mood to discuss any of the half a dozen films he is due to appear in this year, a roster which is due to include a performance in Speed 3, even though I have plenty of questions about that. Surely his character Howard Payne died in a decapitation incident in the last reel of Speed 1? “It’s a river of shit,” he tells me pleasantly but firmly, “from which I have tried to extract some gold.”
I am trying to find any information I can about a reunion with Hopper, Bullock and Reeves for a Speed 3 but I cannot find much save for this interview. It is a brief mention and I do not want to read into it – but will we see a Speed 3?
The fact that Hopper calls this film a “river of shit” when he has been in them is a refreshing moment of hilarious honesty. I echo the question of the interviewer and wonder how a decapitated man can return to continue hi jinx with Keanu? I have so many questions about Speed 3 and sadly I will have to wait to see what happens. This is a film shrouded in mystery, do I smell direct to DVD?
