Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a solid film (as you can see in my review), and people everywhere are flocking to see this sucker as it just set a new box office record for the most cash ever on a Wednesday. The good folks at Yahoo News give us this:
The fifth feature in the franchise, which bowed in 4,181 theaters, took in an estimated $44.23 million at the North American box office for the day, including $12 million from midnight screenings. That earned the movie the title of biggest Wednesday opening ever, trumping the previous record-holder, Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man 2,” which bowed to a single-day gross of $40.4 million in 2004.
That’s a lot of lap dances. It’s also mentioned that this is the largest opening day amount for any of the Potter films. It’s nice to see the summer turning around as far as the quality of the films. The first big 3 (Shrek 3, Pirates 3, Spider-Man 3) were all such loads of garbage I was fearing the whole summer would end up that way. Transformers and Harry Potter have given up hope. Now is Bourne 3 and The Simpons can deliver, I will declare this summer “Salvaged”.
