Word is out that Jim Carrey is set to play the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a remake of “A Christmas Carol”. Carrey is also going to play the 3 ghosts (The ghost of Christmas Past, The ghost of Christmas Present, and The ghost of Christmas Future). The folks at Yahoo News give us the following:
Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis will direct the movie from his own script, based on the Charles Dickens classic novel, a Disney spokeswoman said. The movie will blend live action with 3-D digital animation and a computer-graphics style called “performance capture,” which Zemeckis used in his 2004 holiday adventure “The Polar Express” and his upcoming film “Beowulf,” the spokeswoman said.
A Christmas Carol is one of those rare stories that I’ve never minded seeing remade over and over again. It’s like a classic song that you’re interested in hearing other musicians renditions of. Some of the Christmas Carol takes are terrible… but several have been totally classic (My favorites are obviously the Alastair Sim version… Scrooged… and laugh at me all you want, but I adore the Muppets version as well).
Jim Carrey needs something. The guy was the hottest and highest paid A-Lister in Hollywood, and in just a couple of years, he’s dropped to almost obscurity (I’m exaggerating a little bit… but you know what I mean). And as classic as Christmas Carol is… I’m really not sure it’s the type of project that can re-establish him. But who knows? What do you think?
