Times sure are changing. Yeah yeah yeah, we all know the internet is changing everything, but these number caught me a little by surprise. You see, even though I run a movie website, there are still times that I see a trailer for a new movie that I hadn’t heard of. So it’s only normal that a lot of other people still first hear about certain new films via in theater trailers or TV commercials.
Well, I came across an interesting study on Yahoo News that show about 51% of teens today first hear about new movies via the internet. It broke down like this:
15 percent discover new films from entertainment Web sites
15 percent from social networking sites
13 percent from video-sharing sites
8 percent from movie-ticket sites.
I was talking to another movie site webmaster this morning about this topic and we both thought the numbers would still be a bit lower, but they’re climbing faster and faster.
And yet, studios still pay their vast majority of attention to traditional media outlets. Talk about falling behind the curve. Don’t get me wrong, I’m one of those people who believe the traditional media outlets still have, and will always have a very important place in the whole media explosion. I honestly do. But I think it’s time that the studios start recognizing the obvious and focus more of their considerable money and energies towards marketing online and utilizing online media because as of right now, it’s still practically ignored. Just a thought.
