Remember that huge star studded Dallas movie that they were all set to make and then everything started falling apart? You know… the one with John Travolta as JR and about a hundred of fairly big names? Thankfully that project died… but like a rotting zombie it seems to keep getting back up… and it’s up again. The folks over at Movieweb report this following bad news:
A big screen adaptation of the TV show Dallas is now being directed by The Brady Bunch Movie’s Betty Thomas. According to Variety, Regency and 20th Century Fox are overhauling the long gestating project. John Travolta is still set to play the iconic oilman J.R. Ewing, with a script written by Hot Rod’s Pam Brady. Now a comedy, the budget will be a lot lower than its original $65 million price tag. The film should begin shooting in January, with an early 2009 release date.
This has got to be a joke. Well, it is a joke… but in a different way. So they’re going to do Dallas as a straight comedy now? WTF? And they’ve hired the director from The Brady Bunch Movie?!?! WTF!?!?! This thing has total disaster written all over it.
Look, I was actually one of the few people thought the ORIGINAL idea for a Dallas movie wasn’t a bad one. As a dramatic narrative, I thought those characters and that basic premies could have totally worked as a full length feature film. I still think that could have worked. The problem originally was they were focusing too much on getting big names with bigger egos to fill every possible role, which to me would have just distracted and detracted from the film. But even that was a better idea than this… a straight comedy with the Brady Bunch director at the helm. One more time…. WTF!?!?!
