Looks like they’re remaking Isle of the Dead. Holy smokes I never thought they’d do this one. Our friends over at FirstShowing give us this:
In the original 1945 film directed by Val Lewton, Karloff played a Greek military commander on an island where a plague breaks out. He orders the isle quarantined and as residents fall ill and die, some begin to suspect that a vampire-demon might be the cause of the deaths. RKO Pictures has hired writers Brian Horiuchi and Matt Lazarus to adapt a remake of Boris Karloff cult film. The remake will be set against the backdrop of a viral outbreak in Afghanistan.
Ok, so it’s not truly a “remake” per se… being set in Afghanistan and all. Look, as most of you know I’m totally cool with remakes. They have just as good of a chance of being good as any other film (7 out of 10 movies suck… 7.5 out fo 10 remakes suck… so there you go), but I’ve got to ask why on earth remake a movie whose premise is practically identical to about 7 other movies currently out on DVD or in theaters, or in production?
These smaller studios just want to crank out these smaller budget projects (not a bad idea mind you) but they all look exactly the frigging same. I’m willing to let “Doomsday” slide on that because it’s got an amazing and proven director and to be honest looks more like MAD MAX to me than like another zombie/vampire type isolation film (of where there are about 398 that have come out this year alone). LET IT GO!
