As most of you know, sometime ago Kevin Smith was given the nod to direct a Green Hornet movie Eventually though (as he tells the story in one of his “Evening with Kevin Smith”‘s, he backed out of it feeling that doing an action film wasn’t yet within his ability to properly do. Thus, the new Seth Rogan vision of Green Hornet (oh that’s going to be bad). Anyway…
A few years have past since then, and apparently Smith is keen on doing a comic book film. Our good friends over at Slashfilm give us this:
“I think that by that point, by my 10th film, I’ll be ready to take on something that is very visually oriented,” Smith told Wizard. “The 10th movie I think is going to be a comic book movie – not “The Green Hornet,” though. There’s something that we’re kind of negotiating on right now which would actually be pretty cool. I don’t know what the audience for it would be, but I would dig making it because I’ve always been a fan of the character. I can’t say what it is though, because they haven’t locked it in.”
So here is where the total and pure speculation comes into play. As Peter brings up, there is a film in the works called “Supermax” that we’ve talked about on here before. Not much movement there… but it is being developed. From an old post of ours:
“Super Max” is Goyer’s take on supervillain incarceration in the DCU. Revolving around a wrongly convicted Green Arrow being whisked away to the super max prison for out-of-control heroes and villains (where he’s forced to face a number of inmates he put there), Goyer says the flick-which he’s developing with writer Justin Marx-isn’t just a Green Arrow film.
Ok, sounds great… continue with speculation now… Kevin Smith once wrote for the Green Arrow comic book. Add that now to the fact that this project is in development… and add that to the fact that Smith is now saying he’s getting ready to do a comic based movie. The pieces do seem to all fit together.
But should Kevin Smith be directing a comic book movie? Of that I’m not so sure. I’ve become a fan of his… Clerks 2 is one of the best comedies I’ve ever seen (it’s a lot smarter than most people give it credit for if you really watch and listen to what’s going on). However… Smith’s strength’s lay in dialog. He writes terrific, sharp dialog. Directing something like an action comic movie (which he himself talked about in “Evening With…”) is a VERY different gig, and I’m just not sure that’s his bag or not.
Granted, I only partially say that because he’s never done it before, and he might be great at it… I just have my reservations about it.
