Man, I thought this puppy was dead and burried years ago. Here’s the deal. YEARS ago it was announced that Howard Stern was going to develop a Porky’s remake (yes… that Porky’s). Personally, I don’t think in today’s changed world you can do that original any justice anymore… but there’s nothing to say you can’t try.
Anyway, from what I remember, the film was supposed to go into production in like 2002 or 2003 and nothing ever happened. It drifted off into the great nothingness. That’s where I thought it still was. But surprise surprise… the thing still has life in it, and apparently now Stern is saying they’re ready to go into production. Slashfilm gives us this:
Howard Stern has been hard at work on a remake of the cult teen comedy film Porky’s. Last week Stern took a vacation from his daily Sirius Satellite Radio Show and worked on the film project which the Shock Jock now claims is “ready to go.” “They say it’s all greenlit and everything, ready to go. They say they can even start shooting in October, but I don’t know if that’s true,” says Stern. “It seemed like a fun project, which it is.”
Look, forget for a moment that this is a Howard Stern baby. I just don’t think you can develop this into something that actually works today, and still resemble anything even close to Porky’s. There was something about the original that was so brilliant in it’s execution in relation to the culture at the time it both portrayed and theatrically ran in, that I just don’t think can be duplicated.
What you’re more than likely to get is a raunchy (nothing wrong with raunchy in and of itself), pointless anal sex and lesbian scenes… pushing the limits of taste… but without any of the subtle overtones of what it meant to be an adolescent at that time. The pressures, the challenges and difficulties the world presented “Hey Jew Boy”. Porky’s was genius in the way it incorporated both dimensions into one classic film. Howard Stern is just not capable of that…. I’m sure it will be funny, and I’ll see it…. it just won’t deserve to wear the name “Porky’s” on it.
