I’ve heard some strange concepts for a film before. Movies based on video games is bad enough. A lot of gamers make the massive mistake of thinking just because something is a fun game, that means it will be a good movie… all while failing to realize that a game has about 1/10th of the actual story elements needed to tell a compelling story. Games are meant for gameplay… not narrative.
So let’s take this one step further. How about basing a movie on a board game? It’s not totally unheard of… it has been done before (CLUE anyone?) but it still seems like a strange concept to me. And that’s exactly what Ridley Scott is talking about right now. The man is going to make a Monopoly movie. The L.A. Times has this:
Monopoly is still the most popular board game — I might be misquoting! — in the world. So it’s really finding the universe for that game. Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family — the funny way it brings out, particularly when your uncle suddenly gets Park Lane and — in England, we have Park Lane, Mayfair and Barclay Square, what’s it in America? Park and Madison? So you watch people change. You’re witness to Jekyll and Hyde. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film.
Are you kidding me? Seriously? Is good old Ridley finally starting to lose it?
