Spider-man 3 was a wretched film that any alien race who wanted to show an intergalactic court that the human race deserves to be exterminated would use as evidence at the trial. Yes, it’s that bad. HOWEVER, you can’t argue that what Sam Raimi has done with this franchise has been anything short of wonderful. The first Spider-Man was quite good. The second film was nothing short of amazing… and the third film… well… let’s just say everyone is allowed to have a bad day at the office.
Speculation about Sam Raimi’s involvement in Spider-Man 4 has been all over the place. He will indeed be involved on some level no matter what… that much is clear. But will he direct it? He recently said this to Empire:
I don’t know if I’ll just be a producer on it but if I can work with the writer in such a way so that directing would be right for me, I don’t know. We’ve had our first meeting on Spider-Man 4 and we’re looking for the writer”
So there is a CHANCE Raimi will direct it, but I remain convinced he will. Nor do I think he should direct it. He’s spent YEARS on this franchise, and I think he needs to move on to something else. It’s certainly not that I think he’s no longer capable of doing a good Spider-Man film, but I think he’s done all he can do on this one. Time to hand it off to some fresh blood, and that way he can move on to some fresh material to give us. We’ll have to wait and see.
