The original Starship Troopers is an odd film to try to categorize in my evaluation model. On the one hand the film is just a horrible mess with terrible acting, worse dialog and a somewhat pathetic attempt at social commentary. All true… HOWEVER… the film somehow also manages to create some great quotable moments, deliver some honest to goodness fun, and in a sense is something you’re very much NOT supposed to take too seriously (And Michael Ironside is always pure money). So I hate it… and I love it.
Starship Troopers 2 made little to no splash, but Starship Troopers 3 is shaping up pretty well and is indeed in the can. The folks over at Moviehole give some insight on the talk going on around Starship Troopers 3:
“Starship Troopers : Marauder”, Stelio Savante (“Ugly Betty”), who says this one is very much of the same breed that the first one was – being a social commentary and all that jazz. “Yes it’s a very well written satirical commentary in the form of a sci-fi action movie that captivates you and that’s not easy to pull off but Ed did it brilliantly. I personally love the faith aspect of it. I feel it makes the film very rich because you could easily come out if it feeling one way or another about your own faith and I do have a strong faith in God so the progression of my character’s faith was natural. Each character symbolizes someone or something and the way they endure and overcome tumultuous circumstances in the face of adversity is determined by their faith or lack thereof.”
Troopers is like a zombie genre film. It’s really all exactly the same as everything else you’ve seen from the series… it’s these space marines you see…. with weapons… fighting these giant bugs they’re in a war with. Lots of over the top violence and action and gratuitous gore shot to make you squirm and laugh at the same time. Nothing new here… and yet we look forward to seeing it everytime.
