Movie studios double dipping (when they release a movie on DVD, only later to release some sort of “special edition” in an attempt to get fans to buy the movie in question yet again) is one of the more despicable practices going on today in the industry. I don’t mind if it’s like 10 years later and you want to remaster and re-release it with some new special stuff… that’s ok. But when a studio releases one version, and all along plan on releasing another version in 4-6 months with bonus material they know the harder core fans will want, and will probably pay AGAIN to get… that’s spitting in fans face. If you want to have a “regular” dvd version, and a “special” dvd version, I say release them both at the same time so the fans can choose which one they want. But I digress…
Usually when a “Special Edition” dvd gets released, it’s a film that supposedly a lot of people love right? I mean, what’s the point of releasing a “special edition” ofa movie that sucked and everyone hates? Well, I guess Lionsgate seems to think that we’re all secretly huge “Alone in the Dark” fans… because they’re releasing a Special Edition DVD for it. I shit you not. Our friends over at Cinematical give us this:
On September 25 Lionsgate will release an extended, unrated director’s cut of … are you ready? Alone in the Dark. Yes, the Uwe Boll one. Seriously. The one with Tara Reid in smart-girl glasess. One of the most hilariously lame movies of the last ten years will now be available in Dr. Uwe Boll’s final vision. I’m sure the professors at USC are scheduling their lectures as we speak. According to DVDA, the director’s cut will run 98 minutes, whereas the IMDb reminds us that the theatrical run ran 96 minutes in length. Surely 120 seconds of footage deemed unworthy to make the final cut of a Uwe Boll film is worthy of your $17 dollar investment!
I’m just speechless. You know how sometimes you see a dumb product and you say “No one will buy that”. Well, you don’t mean that literally… because 99% of the time SOMEONE will buy it. But this… I mean… REALLY!?!?! I ask this literally… WILL ANYONE BUY THIS? I mean even just for a joke. Will anyone actually go up to the counter, take out their wallet and say “Yes, I’d like to purchase (with real money) the Special Edition DVD of Alone in the Dark please. Make it two just in case I scratch one”.
