Shrek 3 Passes $750 Million World Wide

Holy crap. Shrek 3… by far the weakest of the Shrek films, and one of the worst films of the summer, propelled by the strength and reputation of the previous films has once again come in at #1 in the international box office making over $17 million this week which takes its world wide total to about $757 million. GOOD…. FRICKING…. GRIEF!

Never underestimate the power of a kid friendly film. Especially one that is the third in a series and the previous ones have been quality, thus increasing the trust audiences put in it. The folks at Yahoo News give us this:

The animated film, which began its overseas rollout May 17, posted No. 1 debuts in Italy ($10.8 million), Norway ($1.9 million), Denmark ($1.8 million) and Sweden ($1.4 million). It was playing in 24 territories. “The Bourne Identity” finished second with $15.1 million. The action sequel enjoyed six No. 1 openings, led by Australia with $5.1 million.

That’s a lot of damn cabbage. With those numbers, you know Dreamworks is salivating at the prospects of getting Shrek 4 out there. But they better be prepared for a drop in returns. Shrek 3 benefitted greatly from parts 1 and 2…. this time, Shrek 4 will be coming off a terrible film which will hurt it. It’ll still make big money… don’t you worry… but nothing like these sorts of amazing numbers.
