Tron 2

Tron-PosterIt’s been talked about for ages now. As “on again, off again” as Indiana Jones 4, with just a little less attention to it. But it looks like the classic sci-fi film TRON is finally coming back to the screen. The interesting news is that it’s not going to be a remake of the original, but rather “the next chapter”.

The good folks over at Cinemablend have this:

Disney is keeping the story under wraps, but they’re calling the movie “the next chapter”, which should mean we’re getting a sequel and not another awful, remake. With Lisberger (the director of the original movie) producing, that should mean Tron is safe from Hollywood revisionism. Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are writing the script with input from Kosinski. Kitsis and Horowitz are TV writers, but good TV writers having worked on shows like Lost.

This presents several interesting things:

1) It will be great to see Tron on the big screen again. Who isn’t happy about this news?

2) The Look. The look of the original is laughable now no doubt… so how will a new Tron movie handle the look and visuals of this new film. You can’t make it a complete departure from the original… nor can you make it look like the 80’s. Enterprise had that same sort of dilemma when it was supposed to be PRIOR to the original Star Trek series.

3) The way they approach the story will be interesting to see. If it is indeed a sequel, or “the next chapter” as disney is putting it… how to you structure the story for those who have never seen the original. I mean after all… the original is 25 years old!!! Many of the readers of this site weren’t even alive when this thing came out.

Overall, this is good news for sci-fi fans everywhere. And just for good measure here is the trailer for the original:
