As most of you know by now, in the upcoming Star Trek movie, the role of a younger Mr. Spock is going to be played by Heroes star Zach Quinto (Sylar). This was a brilliant piece of casting for the role. But what many of you may not have known, is just how close Oscar winner Adrien Brody came to landing the part. The good folks over at MTV give us this:
“I did talk to J.J. [Abrams] about that,” he told me today. And shed a tear for Mr. Brody, because he sounds kind of bummed that he missed out. “That would have been cool. I told my parents. They got a kick out of it. ‘I may be Spock!’ Oh, well. Could have been cool.” So did he do the famous live long and prosper salute for J.J. to try to get the part? “No. Didn’t do it. Maybe I should have. Would have had a better shot at the role,”
Now, while I’m thrilled that Zach got the part, and I do think it was for the best, I must say that Adrien Brody would have been a solid choice as well. One of my big sayings is “It’s never a bad idea to bring talent on board” regardless of the part or project, and Brody is loaded with talent.
Still, in the end the right choice was made… but if the next Star Trek movie sucks, there will be a LOT of people second guessing not bringing the Oscar winner on with the movie.
