There are few people in the movie world who are more reviled (without actually committing any criminal acts) than Uwe (pronounced oo-vay) Boll. Aside from Ed Wood, no director in history has become so well known for being so bad. But this only serves to give him an almost rock star like status in many ways. So you can imagine my enthusiasm when I got a call earlier on Saturday asking if I’d like to get together with Uwe. YES!
Boll was flying into Toronto to attend a screening of his film “In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale” at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. I was to meet him at his hotel at 5pm… but his plane landed a bit late and traffic was bad… and even though he just flew in from Germany, he still came right to where I was supposed to meet him. A lot of celebrities would have blown the interview off (understandably) for less than that… but Boll still met with me, which I think says a lot about him.
The discussion is a short one, but I think surprisingly revealing about Boll. His attitude about his status, his enjoyment of people actually liking a couple of his movies now, and his feelings towards those who have bashed him (you might be surprised by what he says… I was). I’ve got to tell you, when you’re in the room and just chatting with the man for a while, he’s hard not to like.
I’ll give my review of Dungeon Siege a little later (ummm… damn…. well… I actually was mildly entertained by it. No… really), but for now, here is my conversation with Uwe Boll:
And hey folks… the Toronto After Dark Film Festival is still going strong! Make sure to go check it out.
