McG May Direct Terminator 4

Mcg-Terminator-4Forced optimism. That’s what I’ve chosen to have regarding Terminator 4. Deep down do I really think it could be any good? No, not really… but there is the chance, and really… there isn’t anything compelling to suggest that Terminator 4 WON’T be great… remember, it’s a whole new team in charge of it now, so it’s not like you can use T-3 as evidence either way. And I’m also one of the few people who think it’s a VERY GOOD idea to not include Arnold in it. No disrespect to Arnie… but his time is up at that character.

However, that forced optimism just got seriously shot in the face and dropped dead. Word on the street right now is that the new production company is actually looking at McG to direct Terminator 4. Yes… Charlie’s Angels McG. Now don’t get me wrong, I actually liked the first Charlie’s Angles… and you know what… We Are Marshall wasn’t that bad either, and he does produce one of my favorite shows on TV right now in Supernatural, but the pure vomit inducing crap that was Charlie’s Angels 2 is something I will never forgive him for.

My friend Sean over at Filmjunk had this to say:

While I have nothing against the Charlie’s Angels movies specifically, I simply don’t see him as being the right man for the job. Not only does he come from a slick music video background (not always a bad thing in itself), but the majority of his work just seems tailor-made for trendy teens.

Astute observation. It could be that they’re taking the franchise in a whole new direction… which ISN’T NECESSARILY A BAD THING. Maybe they are making a new kind of Terminator movie… and maybe… JUST MAYBE… if we open our minds a little and put aside our pre-concieved notions of what a Terminator movie is supposed to be… we’ll embrace and enjoy it. It could happen. Just not likely.
