The Weinsteins have picked up a low-budget Norwegian parody of the Quentin Tarantino hit, ‘Kill Bill’ that has surprisingly become a huge success overseas.
Comingsoon.net gives us this:
Distributors in several countries are opting for theatrical releases but the Weinstein territories are likely to be released straight to DVD.
Kill Buljo was co-written, co-produced and helmed by Tommy Wirkola and a group of friends for Yellow Bastard Productions, and shot in Finnmark, northern Norway.
I’m not a fan of many parody films, (maybe it’s because I think it’s a greedy attempt at making money of somebody else’s successful ideas) but I do know that for a spoof to do relatively well at the box office is for the film to poke fun at what’s current. ‘Kill Bill’ was released over four years ago and the jokes may be considered cringe-worthy or tired to North American audiences. (To me it would feel like seeing yet another “Oops…I did it again” joke about Britney Spears onscreen.)
However, I can’t judge ‘Kill Buljo’ until I see it. It might be great, and if it’s released straight to DVD (because I can’t find myself going to the theatres to see this) I will definitely check it out.
