Courtney Love has announced her casting choices for the upcoming Kurt Cobain Biopic. We get the news this morning from the delightful WEBMASTER at Filmjunk:
This week there are reports that Courtney Love has decided on her two favourites to play the role of herself and Kurt, and the two lucky winners are… Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Gosling! Of course, it remains to be seen whether or not either of them would even be interested. With Love acting as her own producer, it seems like this is only wishful thinking right now, although she has supposedly sent a contract out to Johansson already in the hopes that she would sign on the dotted line.
I actually think Courtney is right on the money with her choices. I can totally see Gosling as Kurt Cobain, grow the hair out, bleach it blonde, grow some scruff and the likeness is totally ther. I think Scarlet is a bit of an upgrade compared to Courtney Love, but a few weeks of hard partying and no sleep should make her ready for the role. These two are hot commodities right now and both have the bonus of growing up through the Kurt Cobain years.
When Nevermind broke – I was in grade 9. Kurt Cobain was huge and grunge music was everywhere overnight. Metal was getting over commercialized and the grunge backlash was startling to say the least. Bands that played arenas a few years before were now reduced to playing small clubs; the decadent rockers were left with wheels spinning wondering what the hell had happened. A dude in a cardigan (with issues) was spilling his guts out on the radio and it was connecting with a generation of kids in a powerful way.
Love him or hate him, Kurt Cobain was a prophet a poet and a pied piper to a lot of people. When he blew his millionaire head off, I was at school and the mood was heavy. Lots of people were visibly bummed out, and those with dark senses of humor immediately began crafting Kurt Cobain suicide jokes (which remain a hit to this day). The voice of a generation, a man throngs looked up to, just took his life; legions were down a hero and left dazed, wandering the wastes considering the meaning of it all.
I am pumped to see this movie. I like Nirvana but would not consider myself a huge fan; that being said – you cannot deny Kurt’s place in Rock And Roll history. He changed the game and his story is one that needs to be told.
