It looks like the Saturn Awards have heaped honor upon 300 and have announce 10 nominations for their award ceremony that will take place June 24. We get the scoop from the mysterious caves of yahoo:
With 10 nominations, the ancient Greek adventure tale “300” led the list of nominees announced Wednesday for the Academy of Science Fiction and Horror Films’ 34th annual Saturn Awards. “300” was nominated in the best action/adventure/thriller category along with “3:10 to Yuma,” “The Bourne Ultimatum,” “Live Free or Die Hard,” “No Country for Old Men,” “There Will Be Blood” and “Zodiac.”
I loved 300 and will welcome any opportunity for someone to praise that film. With the Saturn Awards focusing on Science Fiction and Horror, it gives fans of those genres an opportunity to discuss the worthy recipients. I also think it is great when you put like films against each other; debate over “what makes a good fantasy/horror film” only strengthens the genre.
It is my hope that 300 opens a flood gate of modern sword and sandal films. We need this type of sword swinging action, and the success of the film only illuminates this fact. In my opinion the best action films have always involved swords, I like guns as much as anyone, but the sword is a romantic symbol of heroism and warfare that works very well on the silver screen. From Star Wars To Kill Bill sword-fighting has given us some amazing scenes and I always hunger for more.
