There are glorious murmurings of a possible NPH standalone film that come via an interview with AICN. I present to you now, the excerpt in question:
Quint: That’s great. One thing I wanted to bring up with Jon and Hayden, and they even beat me to it… They were talking about “We want to keep making these movies and we were talking about doing spin-off movies…” and I was like “NPH movies!” What would you think about that? It’s a unique situation… because it’s you, but it’s not you… at least I’d imagine….
Neil Patrick Harris: Part of me thinks that would be really hilarious just to make up this fictitious back story of my family and that makes me think of Steve Martin in THE JERK, just going really outlandish and then part of me thinks that is just truly jumping the shark, so I don’t know. When you are spinning off a character that’s based on a real person, but not real… I don’t know, it might be too much, but if anyone can write it…
Well it’s no secret that NPH ruled in Harold and Kumar 1 & 2. I would certainly be on board for a stand alone film and would lose my shit if it ever gets announced. NPH thinking along the lines of The Jerk is also good news. A humorous origin story of NPH that skews history for comedic effect could make for some insanely hilarious scenes, and I have no doubt that they will include his role as Doogie Howser M.D.
NPH is comedy gold and right now the anvil is hot to forge films with him as the lead. At SXSW the theatre went fucking berserk when he was on the screen, and his lines were among the best in the film. We all hunger for more NPH and if the powers that be have their ears to the tracks – they will make it so.
