It looks like the much mocked Alvin and the Chipmunks has come out swinging and taken the DVD title its debut weekend. We get the sales numbers from the Caves of Yahoo:
After its surprisingly strong performance at the box office, it was perhaps less of a shock when “Alvin and the Chipmunks” debuted at No. 1 on the national DVD sales and rental charts Wednesday.
Last week, Fox said consumers snapped up 2.6 million DVDs of “Alvin” on its first day in stores Tuesday, the equivalent of about $45 million in spending. The film grossed $44.3 million in U.S. theaters in its opening weekend last December, and went on to earn more than $215 million. The top-selling Blu-ray Disc for the week also was “Alvin,” with “I Am Legend,” falling to No. 2.
The majority of critics hated this film, but it appears to have struck a chord with youngsters. Children across the land have nagged their parents into getting this film stat! I am quite surprised by the success of this film in the DVD market, for those of you that have children I ask you: Did your children like this film and did kids in general go ga-ga for this film?
I didn’t get a chance to see this film, I enjoyed the Chipmunks as a child myself and have no desire to see them bastardized. Enough people I trust have told me I can safely skip this one; and I plan to do just that.
