The much maligned remake of Friday The 13th has obtained a female lead in Amanda Righetti. We get wind of this news thanks to our friends at comingsoon:
Amanda Righetti is in final negotiations to play the female lead in the Michael Bay-produced remake of Friday the 13th, directed by Marcus Nispel. Variety says filming will begin April 21 in Austin, Texas. Righetti also recently joined the cast of CBS pilot “The Mentalist” and her credits include Return to House on Haunted Hill and a recurring guest role on “K-Ville.” Jared Padalecki and Derek Mears co-star in the New Line pic, scheduled for a February 13, 2009 release.
Most people are not very enthused about the amount of remakes that are coming down the pipe. I know I am certainly one of them. One remake that I was hoping would never get out of the “idea” stage was Friday The 13th. The 80’s was a unique time for slasher films, and the era was as much a part of the early films as Jason. These films are classics of the genre and should not be remade out of respect.
The fact that the series lends itself to sequels only adds insult to injury. You can continue to make Friday The 13th films till our sun runs out of gas, I would be all for it. The series welcomes different visions and fables about Jason, so why don’t they just add to the cannon?
I think a remake of this film is a terrible idea and I am saddened that the ball is rolling on this one. With luck, someone in a hockey mask will kill everyone involved.
