We have discovered news today about a new gangster film starring Ray Winstone. The film is called 44 Inch Chest and we get the skinny from our friends at cinematical:
If you remember, last November I blogged about Ray Winstone’s upcoming films, one of which was 44 Inch Chest, which would have him acting alongside Ian McShane, John Hurt, and Tim Roth. According to Variety, even more have signed on for the British gangster film — namely, Tom Wilkinson, Stephen Dillane (who recently kicked butt as Thomas Jefferson in John Adams), Joanne Whalley, and Melvil Poupaud.
Written by Sexy Beast writers Louis Melles and David Scinto, and being directed by Melcolm Venville, the film stars Winstone as a gangster “who seeks revenge on his wife and young French lover.” I think it would be safe to say that Whalley (Willow) will play the wife, and Poupaud (Goodboy in Speed Racer) will play the lover, since, well, his name in the film is “Loverboy.”
I am going to guess that the wife and lover of Winstone’s character rat him out in order to cut a deal, and then he returns to throw vengeance upon them. A revenge film where a gangster kills 2 romantic companions sounds like it could have some promise! This is the antithesis to what we usually get. Most often than not, the love interests end up helping their criminal lover escape, or follow them into oblivion.
The title sets the stage right away for a film about an imposing man. I would have a 44 inch chest, if you cloned me, and glued the two of us together. I guess that’s why I’m blogging with my delicate secretary arms, and the people with barrel chests are busy committing crime. We all have our part to play.
I will be sure to hunt for further news about this project, and keep you up to speed on the progress.
