It looks like John Rambo has been kicking ass in rental outlets right out of the gate. We get the following numbers from the Swiss money vaults of yahoo:
“Rambo” was the No. 1 choice in DVD rental stores during its first week of release, but failed to unseat the “National Treasure” sequel from the top of the sales chart, according to data issued Wednesday. The belated fourth installment in the Sylvester Stallone action franchise, bowed at No. 2 on Nielsen VideoScan’s saleschart for the week ended June 1, behind “National Treasure: Book of Secrets.”
In rental stores, “Rambo” generated an estimated $8.6 million, or 20% of its theatrical gross of $42.8 million. “Rambo” also led the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, and the new “Rambo Trilogy” debuted at No. 3. “National Treasure” slipped to No. 2.
Rambo 4 was an all out orgy of violence. It’s no surprise to me that word of mouth has caused this film to be quite successful at the rental outposts. The film was over the top, and had a lot of people talking about how crazy the violence was.
Generating 20% of its theatrical gross its first week out of the gate is outstanding. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rambo 4 continues to be a popular rental for quite some time to come. I know I want to see it again.
I am a little startled that National Treasure: Book of Secrets is selling so many copies of their DVD. I can’t even offer an explanation why – so I have decided to chalk it up to hypnosis.
