We have discovered news of the romantic comedy Still You for you to investigate today. We get the lovely scoop from the professionals at THR:
MGM has picked up the original comedy pitch “Still You” from screenwriter April Blair for $300,000 against $625,000. Jennifer Eatz, Walt Becker and Aline Brosh McKenna are producing. MGM executive vp production Cale Boyter and vp production Becky Sloviter will oversee for the studio. Blair’s story line revolves around a family vacation complicated by the appearance of the wife’s flashy ex-boyfriend.
“Metaphorically speaking, your past occupies a part of every relationship,” Blair said. “In our story, it’s sort of the physical manifestation of your ex-boyfriend literally in the third row of your minivan.”
They had much of the “uncomfortable ex” in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and it was done well. This film will probably follow suit with much of the gags but employ the marriage angle to set it apart (this is pure speculation on my part however, the two films may share nothing in common.) I am not a huge fan of romantic comedies but for those of you that are – I hope this is a film that will do justice to the genre.
Aline Brosh McKenna was responsible for scribing The Devil Wears Prada (which I loved) and 27 Dresses (which was blah), hopefully this film will land somewhere in between, or better.
The romcom has been beaten to death and I can only imagine how hard it would be to come up with something fresh in this genre. Adding exes to the mix seems to be a worthy piece to add to the game. With luck, it will be an angle that sets this film apart and gives it a life of its own; rather than just fading into the background of shit that we can usually expect.
